This piece discusses Dr. Block’s plans to write a 6-part series exposing the flaws in the FAA's medical clearance system for pilots and air traffic controllers.
Initially, I explored this topic as I was motivated to offer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) as a 1st-line treatment for depression to first-line treatment for 1st responders, military, and pilots/ATC. That then sent me down the rabbit hole, finding complexities beyond my imagination. I ended up looking, specifically, at pilots’ mental health and the bureaucratic hurdles they face in the current FAA system.
This, then, is the focus of the series: a deep dive into the complexities of the FAA's regulations, the challenges faced by pilots and air traffic controllers seeking medical clearance, and the potential impact of these policies on aviation safety.
